Recovery Associates Family Program

The staff at Recovery Associates would like to thank you for allowing us to treat your loved one. Our treatment team views addiction as a multi-generational family disease that affects each and every family member. We believe that the disease of addiction has significant physical, emotional and social consequences, not only for the individual seeking treatment but also for his/her family and significant others.

We strongly believe that family involvement is critical in the recovery process. We have, therefore, established a family program. The purpose of this program is to assist you and your family in better understanding the disease of addiction, as well as to provide an opportunity to address the many questions and concerns you may have about your loved one and this powerful disease. Additionally, we at Recovery Associates believe in evidence based treatment and have begun to implement the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT).CRAFT is a program scientifically developed with validated behavioral principles to reduce the Identified Patient’s (IP) substance use and/or actions and encourages treatment as well as increase quality of life to the Concerned Significant Other (CSO). “Most clients (CSO’s) find new joy in their lives from the changes they make for themselves, as well as from the satisfaction of seeing their loved ones begin the journey to healing” (Meyers, Wolfe, pg. xvii)

Recovery Associates welcomes families monthly to the Family Weekend for an extensive three day event including lectures, workshops, and speakers increasing awareness of the disease model of addiction. Additionally families interact, connect, relate, and share a journey of healing. Families hear firsthand from a Recovery Associates Alumni and their family member to showcase what recovery looks like and to bring hope for those families struggling in early recovery. The medical definition of what addiction is as follows from the National Institute of Health and the American Society of Addiction Medicine:

Medical Definition: Compulsive physiological need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly: persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be physically, psychologically, or socially harmful (National Institute of Health).

Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors. (American Society of Addiction Medicine).

In closing, Recovery Associates recognizes that any admission to a treatment facility is a major transition for both the client and the family. Upon entering treatment, the person of addiction may experience a sense of fear and vulnerability. It is a stressful time, and they may be easily overwhelmed as they begin to face the consequences of their addiction without the use of drugs and alcohol. We also recognize the importance of a family recovery program to assist with the impact from the disease of addiction and we are privileged to be a part of your involvement and your journey to recovery.
